Description

Atlas Copco 2906033000 – MD600-1000 Rotor Exchange Kit

The Atlas Copco 2906033000 (2906-0330-00) is an MD600-1000 Rotor Exchange Kit designed to support replacement of the rotor assembly in compatible Atlas Copco MD 600–1000 dryer systems.

The rotor is a critical rotating component of the dryer system. During normal operation, the rotor continuously participates in the moisture-removal and regeneration process. When the rotor reaches the end of its service life or inspection identifies a condition requiring replacement, the rotor exchange kit is used to support the replacement procedure.

Working Process:

During normal operation, compressed air passes through the dryer system where moisture is removed to achieve the required compressed-air quality.

The MD dryer uses a rotating desiccant rotor. As the rotor turns, different sections of the desiccant material move through the process-air and regeneration zones.

In the adsorption zone, the desiccant material removes moisture from the compressed air.

As the rotor rotates, the moisture-loaded desiccant moves toward the regeneration zone.

In the regeneration zone, heated or regenerated air removes the accumulated moisture from the desiccant material.

The regenerated portion of the rotor then rotates back toward the adsorption zone and is ready to absorb moisture again.

This continuous rotation allows the dryer to operate continuously while maintaining the required drying performance.

Over extended operating hours, the rotor assembly and associated components can experience mechanical wear, sealing deterioration, contamination or degradation of the desiccant material.

When rotor replacement is required, the compressor/dryer is shut down, isolated and depressurized according to the applicable Atlas Copco maintenance procedure.

The existing rotor is removed from the dryer assembly and replaced with the appropriate replacement rotor using the 2906033000 Rotor Exchange Kit.

The new rotor is correctly positioned and the associated components are reassembled.

After assembly, the dryer is returned to service and checked for correct rotor movement, sealing, airflow and drying performance.

Main Functions:

  • Supports replacement of the MD600-1000 dryer rotor.
  • Provides the required service components for rotor exchange.
  • Restores rotor operating condition.
  • Supports correct rotor positioning and alignment.
  • Helps restore sealing around the rotor assembly.
  • Supports reliable adsorption and regeneration cycles.
  • Helps maintain dryer performance after rotor replacement.

Dryer Operating Cycle:

  1. Compressed-Air Entry: Moist compressed air enters the dryer.
  2. Adsorption: The desiccant rotor absorbs moisture from the compressed air.
  3. Dry-Air Delivery: The dried compressed air leaves the adsorption section.
  4. Rotor Rotation: The rotor continuously moves the moisture-loaded desiccant toward the regeneration section.
  5. Regeneration: Heated/regeneration air removes accumulated moisture from the desiccant.
  6. Cooling/Preparation: The regenerated rotor section is prepared for another adsorption cycle.
  7. Return to Adsorption: The rotor rotates the regenerated desiccant back into the process-air zone.
  8. Continuous Operation: Adsorption and regeneration occur continuously as the rotor rotates.

Rotor Exchange Process:

When inspection or scheduled maintenance indicates that rotor replacement is required, the dryer must first be safely shut down.

The equipment is isolated from electrical and pneumatic/pressure sources.

After complete depressurization, access is provided to the rotor assembly.

The existing rotor is carefully removed.

The rotor housing, shaft/interface areas, bearings, seals and mounting surfaces are inspected for wear or damage.

The replacement rotor is then installed using the applicable components and instructions associated with the 2906033000 Rotor Exchange Kit.

Correct alignment is essential because the rotor must rotate freely and maintain the required relationship with the surrounding sealing and airflow components.

After installation, the assembly is checked for:

  • Correct rotor positioning
  • Free rotation
  • Proper sealing
  • Correct mechanical alignment
  • Absence of abnormal friction
  • Correct airflow path

The dryer is then restarted according to the applicable Atlas Copco procedure.

Possible Failure Conditions:

Long-term operation can cause deterioration of the rotor and associated components.

Potential conditions include:

  • Rotor wear
  • Desiccant deterioration
  • Rotor contamination
  • Mechanical damage
  • Bearing wear
  • Seal deterioration
  • Rotor misalignment
  • Increased rotational resistance
  • Air leakage
  • Reduced drying efficiency

Typical symptoms may include:

  • Increased outlet-air dew point.
  • Reduced drying performance.
  • Excessive moisture in the compressed-air system.
  • Abnormal rotor noise.
  • Increased vibration.
  • Rotor movement problems.
  • Air leakage.
  • Increased regeneration demand.
  • Abnormal dryer operating conditions.

A deteriorated rotor can reduce the ability of the dryer to continuously adsorb and remove moisture from compressed air.

Maintenance Procedure:

Before performing rotor exchange, stop the dryer and compressor system according to the applicable operating procedure.

Isolate all electrical and pneumatic energy sources.

Completely depressurize the equipment and allow hot components to cool to a safe working temperature.

Remove the required covers and access components.

Inspect the existing rotor assembly and surrounding components.

Check:

  • Rotor condition
  • Rotor shaft/interface
  • Bearings
  • Sealing surfaces
  • Housing
  • Mounting components
  • Air passages
  • Signs of contamination or damage

Remove the existing rotor carefully.

Clean the relevant mounting and sealing surfaces.

Install the replacement rotor and the applicable components supplied or specified for the 2906033000 MD600-1000 Rotor Exchange Kit.

Ensure that:

  • The rotor is correctly aligned.
  • The rotor rotates freely.
  • Mounting components are securely fitted.
  • Sealing surfaces are correctly positioned.
  • There is no abnormal mechanical resistance.
  • All covers and connections are correctly restored.

After assembly, perform the applicable leak and mechanical checks.

Restart the dryer and monitor:

  • Rotor operation
  • Airflow
  • Pressure
  • Outlet-air dew point
  • Regeneration performance
  • Abnormal noise
  • Vibration
  • Leakage

A correctly completed rotor exchange restores the mechanical operation of the MD600-1000 dryer and helps maintain the required compressed-air drying performance.
